How to delete the default apps on Windows 10

Depending on the manufacturer, your Windows 10 device may be accompanied by many default applications that you have never used. Here’s how to delete it.

Not all Windows 10 devices are made the same. Unless you buy a device directly from Microsoft, chances are your PC will come with some type of software. This is another way of saying apps that are integrated with your device that seemingly cannot be uninstalled.

That can be very frustrating, especially when Windows 10 is very slick and easy to use at its core. However, there are some things you can do to remove the pesky bloatware from your device and declare your desktop a mess.

How to uninstall Windows 10 Bloatware

Bloatware can be described as anything that comes pre-installed on a device that cannot be removed by the user through the normal way.

In Windows 10, this is often in the form of trial software, antivirus programs, and even some games. All of this uses important disk space and can quickly cause a decrease in performance.

This almost exclusively applies to devices that are not from Microsoft’s own surface line, and the company has developed the solution itself.

Refresh Windows Tool is a free application that you can download directly from Microsoft. When you run it, the tool installs a clean, unencumbered version of Windows 10 to your machine, removing any applications that are not the core of the system. This means that it will also delete the application that you downloaded yourself, so make sure you not only back up your data but you also get the original disk or file for whatever application you want to save.

This is a nuclear option in some ways, although the application can leave all your personal data alone if you choose that option when you first launch it. Windows does slow down over time, so using a refresh tool every few years is an easy way to keep your system dry, plus it’s a good idea if you have just bought or given a used PC.

If you only want to delete a number of programs manually, they can be deleted in the same way as any program. To do this, go to the Start Menu and scroll through the list of applications until you find the one you want to delete. Right-click on the name and then select the Uninstall option.

The above approach will not delete any application that is actually part of Windows 10, and you will not see an option to delete the application when you right-click on it. For such applications it will require a little more work. This is not difficult but will involve using the command line, which at the time of intimidation was initially quite easy.

Open the Start Menu again and type Powershell into the search box. It will appear as Windows PowerShell at the top of the results list. Right-click on it and select the Run as Administrator option. Obviously everything you need is logged in as an Administrator account for this to work. (The default user account that you created when you first got your computer must be an admin account.)

With the PowerShell window open, you can now type the command to delete the intended application.

The command you need to use follows this format;

Get-AppxPackage * application name * | Remove-AppxPackage

So, for example, if you want to delete the Office Hub application, type the following command and press enter;

Get-AppxPackage * officehub * | Remove-AppxPackage

Here is a list of applications and default names that you need to use to delete them;

Camera
Movies & TV – zunevideo
Get Offices – officehub
Get Skype – skypeapp

There are several applications that cannot be uninstalled. These are Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Contact Support, Windows Feedback and, while you can delete Windows Store, that’s not a good idea because you might want it in the future.
