High intensity interval training, including Tabata (20 seconds of exercise, 10 seconds of rest), as well as circuit training (mixing various types of exercises), is very good for improving aerobic and anaerobic health. However, this type of efficient training requires observation time, which can be a bit of a problem … without the right application!
With one of the apps from the list below, you don’t need to worry about time – the exercise timer app will do this part for you so you can concentrate on what’s really important – exercise! So, check the list, choose the application you like the most, and enjoy your training!
Note that first comes applications that are suitable for iOS and Android, then only for Android and then only for iOS. You can click on the category you are aiming at if scrolling down is not an option!
1. Tabata Stopwatch Pro
Tabata Stopwatch Pro is one of the best interval training applications for iOS and for Android. Despite the fact that this application is almost completely free, it contains a large number of useful features! You can use it for HIIT, kettlebell, running, bodyweight training, and more.
This is how it works – you hear different types of beeps that color you from when you start training and when to pause. There is also a voice guide, so if you don’t want to depend on a few beeps, you can choose this option. For some sports, it might be convenient if the color of the digits shows the rest and exercise time are not the same, so if you want, you can rely on your vision instead of your hearing.
There are many other cool features offered by this application, such as counting calories burned, recording time or uploading music playlists. Add to this a modern minimalist design and here it is – perfection! However, not everything is so easy. TSP has two significant limitations that can only be removed by making in-app purchases.
This application allows you to adjust pre-settings such as training time, rest time, warm up, but you cannot save all this so as not to waste time repeating the repetitive customization process. Another limitation concerns the use of applications with locked screens – this makes applications without practical purchases unusable if you want to use them to run, for example.
Fortunately, there are many separate applications for runners that not only get interval training modes, but also many other cool features.
As for TSP, this is a great application and if the restrictions don’t bother you or you’re ready to pay to delete them, download the application now! If not, below are many other options for you!
2. Seconds – Interval Timer for HIIT & Tabata
Seconds is the last application on our list that is present for Android and iOS. This application offers about being the most sophisticated out there. And really, its features are quite impressive. This one, unfortunately, also has limits to save your timer.
In-app purchases allow you to even import and export timers for training, but if you don’t want to spend your money on that, you should go only with templates that are ready. The good thing is the application has this ready-made template! In fact, not just one or two, but for all types of interval training – HIIT, Tabata, Circuit.
Among other advantages of this application is a nice and clear interface for setting music at each interval. So, download the application, check if the interval is right for you, and enjoy! If not, there are many other applications below!
3. Tabata Interval Timer for HIIT
Tabata Interval Timer for HIIT is an amazing training timer application for Android. This application is more than just a timer – it allows you to make a personal training list. You can set many types of intervals such as preparation, work, rest, cooling and so on. When setting work time, it is possible to choose what type of exercise you will do.
One of the biggest advantages of the application is the clear interface with large numbers and different colors for different intervals. This application has 40 sounds to remind you when the interval is over! And you can use voice reminders too. There is a premium version – you can check its features right in the application, however, if you need a basic timer with extended settings, this one is perfect even without buying premium!
4. My Tabata Timer
My Tabata Timer is an alternative to the two applications above. This one is also simple & easy to use! Here’s how it works – you just have to tap to start, tap to stop, and long tap to start again. Easy! If you don’t like the sound of the application, you can tap ‘mute’ by opening the settings (top right corner).
The settings themselves are okay, even more than just okay because, despite all the usual interval adjustments, you can choose the color for your timer. By the way, the color is nice and warm, very pleasing to the eye. So whatever fitness activity you are planning, this exercise timer is definitely for you! Everything else is just a matter of taste.
5. Tabata Timer
Tabata timer is a name that speaks for itself. However, there isn’t just a traditional Tabata interval (20 seconds functioning, 10 seconds rest) – you can set the interval you want. What’s more, you can choose the number of sets you want to do and the preparation time.
This application may not look as fancy as the others for Android, but it has certain features that other applications cannot be proud of above. First, you can choose background music and, second, you can track your workouts as well as your weight right in the app! Seeing history can be very motivating.
So, if the old-fashioned design and a few ads on the screen don’t bother you, this is a good option to consider!
